I May Have A Scrap Problem - January's Scrap Attack Task!

Hi, all!

Well, I have been a bad blogger this week - but in my defense, I've been a bad blogger with a wicked cold.  We got back into town late Saturday night, had church and company on Sunday and Monday, and Tuesday morning I was at the walk-in clinic when they opened.  Two shots, a breathing treatment, and a mess of prescriptions, and I'm finally feeling a lot more human!  But I'm afraid the blog suffered through it all, and I haven't touched my sewing machine since I got home!

However, I did draw a slip out of my Scrap Attack box to see what I was going to be working on this month....

Apparently God has a sense of humor (and a plan!)  because he knew this was the one I needed to draw the most!  (And wanted to, the least!)  But it is certainly the one that is the most likely to establish a good habit - so here's hoping!

When I posted this pic on Instagram, I had a lot of questions about the sizes I cut my scraps.  If I'm cutting without a plan, I tend to start by cutting as many 10" squares as possible from the scrap.  After that, or instead if it's not large enough, I cut as many 5" squares as possible, then 2.5" squares.  The reason I do that is because there are so many patterns out there for pre-cuts, I know I'll be able to find something I want to do with those sizes.  With what's left, I separate out strings (at least 1.5" wide and around 8 or more inches long).  I also separate out any strings that are narrower but pretty and save them to be wrapped into rope bowls.  Any odd size pieces that are left are squared up and added to my "tiny pieces" box that will someday become a scrap vortex quilt like this...

You can find the link for this quilt along on Crazy Mom Quilts -
Look on her quilt-along tab at the top, and it's the last one in the list.

It should be an interesting month, because I have at least two t-shirt quilts to make, and those are a whole different ball of wax when we talk about the scraps!  But I've got a mess of those scraps from earlier quilts too, so maybe I'll get them all done at the same time.

So - what did you draw this month?  Did you get a fun project, or a task you keep putting off?  Link up and share if you want - it's always more fun if we're suffering enjoying this process together!

Hugs!

Sarah

  6. There has been so many bugs going around, take care of you. We understand that there must be a good reason if you haven't been blogging. I like the "project" you drew for this month, one I think I will try to work on too. Feel better!

  7. Glad to hear your are starting to feel better. I need to come up with some plan for my scraps. Cutting them after a project sounds good. Let's see if I can make that happen.

  8. I wish you a speedy recovery as you will need all your energy to attack this month challenge. I like the way you cut your leftover fabric. I never cut 10" but it makes sense. I'll start to do that. Thanks. ;^)

  9. I attacked my scraps in December and feel so much better about my organization. Don't get me wrong, I still have a long way to go, but it's better.
Hope you feel better. Sounds like you were really sick.

  10. Hope you feel better soon - what a way to start the new year!
As for scraps from t-shirt quilts.....I send them to the garage for my husband to use when he changes oil, paints, etc. It's an easy way to use them up!

  11. That sounds like more than a wicked cold. You poor thing! Glad you're feeling better now. Thanks for sharing your method for cutting scraps. May change mine up a little. (By the way, the link for the first person to enter - "Wonky Wishes and Nine Patch" - isn't working????)

  12. Interesting sizes you cut, I just cut those same exact sizes with some old forest green fabric. Just to have ready when I am in the mood to do low key sewing. Feel all better soon. It's hard to keep on the move when not feeling well.

  13. Yikes... I'm bad a keeping my scraps cut up. I now have a basket where I throw odd ball bits and pieces of fabric left. I may try the 5" size cuts -- I've got a die for it and I do tend to use them. So, thanks for the suggestion.

  14. I hope you're back to 100% very soon, Sarah! It's never fun to be sick :(

I'm usually pretty good about cutting up my scraps after a project, and I love that you've made that a goal. I'm currently doing a Double Four Patch as a leader/ender project, so 2.5" and 4.5" squares are getting priority!

  15. So sorry to hear that you were sick over Christmas! That's the worst time of year to be sick. I hope you still enjoyed everything with your family.

  16. Having a cold over the holiday is awful, but I hope you are feeling better. I had a girlfriend stay overnight for New Year's Eve and she didn't bring anything to sew, so I said we could sort my scraps and she was all in! My scraps have been just tossed into bins for decades! We got the majority of them sorted by color and I finished the job and what a job that was! I posted pics on my blog. Now the next task for 2018 is to see how many quilts I can make out of those scraps.

  18. Hope you are feeling better today. It's not fun being sick when you want to get in the sewing room and play with all those scraps!

  19. Sp you must have made a list and put them on paper to pull out. If a follow along, do I do what you did or do I make my own jar list? I do need more scrap attacking.
